We are enchanted by Kelp Constructs, the new work from UK-based designer Julia Lohmann who has been experimenting with kelp, and exploring its potential as a sustainable material. Following an artistic residency at S-AIR in Sapporo Japan, Lohmann was in Milan this year conducting the Kelp Constructs workshop at the Nilufar Gallery. The final products, a collection of wonderfully tactile lighting designs, were on display during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, bringing this rapidly renewable material into a new design realm.
Block: Turkish Marble Meets Design was an exhibition curated by Murat Patavi and held in the Milan’s Design Library in Zona Tortona during design week. Eighteen designers of international renown created work using Turkish marble, originally from the island of Marmara. These contemporary pieces vary tremendously in scope. Matali Crasset’s vanity shelf is framed by a giant robot-like figure, and Paola Navone gives us a marble sofa. Jurgen Bey created marble packaging for a hair dryer and an iron, and above we have detail from a divider by Marco Kogan. More after the jump by Konstantin Grcic, Michael Young and Simon Heijdens.
Fredrikson Stallard are presenting Cavern, a roomscape of furniture, lighting and accessories for Swarovski Crystal Palace in Milan next month. The collection includes furniture (ebonized oak, leather or cast concrete) whose monolith forms are dotted with cavernous openings, which in turn are encrusted with crystals. The effect is akin to that of geological crystalline structures such as geodes. Landscapes by several different important designers will be presented at this time in Milan.
