Being a big fan of Architect Daniel Libeskind, I was immediately taken by the form of the Spirit House Chair. Designed by Libeskind and Klaus Nienkamper the chair is constructed of stainless steel sheets in “interlocking, self-supporting structures, which are reminiscent of crystals”. This chair also has a ghost like reference to the the classic red blue chair that really takes this design over the top. On display at Michael Lee-Chin’s crystal Spirit House, and in the new ROM museum in Toronto; each chair comes with a custom laser-engraved signature of the designer.
The name may be vintage 80’s, but the design is from today. And teens aren’t the only ones who’ll appreciate the interior designs in this book. I have friends with teens and as the book asserts; “when kids hit the teenage years, a new challenge is born in the life of the family home and the home’s current layout may need radical readjusting-and new issues, from controlling noise to allowing privacy, arise.”. Those parents updated rooms in their home that, yes, were teen friendlier, but mostly made the parents happy. Teen Zone will no doubt make teens + parents MoCo design fans happy as it goes about suggesting ideas for games zones, dens and media rooms (as well as bedrooms, family spaces, and even a section on self-contained living for kids who’ve finished school, but haven’t yet flown the nest). Paperback, 160 pages, 250 color photographs, $29.79 at Amazon.
Maude Décor’s new collections, Star Quest and Famous Canadian Mountains, will be launched at this week’s Interior Design Show in Toronto. Star Quest is a modern and creative interpretation of various constellations in a smashing array of colours. Famous Canadian Mountains offers up the topography of several peaks for a truly original collection of floor coverings. Above we have examples of Hydra, Andromeda, Ursa Major and Hydra. After the jump we have some geode-like topography.
