IDS 2008: Fishbol

6 May 2008

Fishbol is a Canadian design team that got its start in Ottawa, but is now based in Toronto. Bookseat, a bent plywood chair that combines shelving with seating was presented at IDS08 and will be available (with a felt cushion) this spring. Bookseat is only one of a selection of unusual chair designs by this young company, including the Lobster Trap Chair and the Gazebo Chair. Also of interest is Fishbol’s Wine Bottle Shelf.

Maplemap

6 May 2008

The Maplemap Light by Ani+Lumigrane was shown at IDS08. Created by Frédéric Guibrunet, a papermaker and lighting designer, and Didier Boursin, an expert in origami, the Maplemap is made out of cotton paper. Assembly of the shade of this limited edition lamp, 100 signed and numbered, is left to the purchaser. Along with two other lamps, Princesse and Mademoiselle (collaborations with Sophie Mouton-Perrat), that combine papier-maché with linen paper, Ani+Lumigrane received the Best Collection Award during IDS08.

IDS 2008: Prototype

1 May 2008

One of the most interesting sections of this year’s IDS show was Prototype, a juried show of work by a mix of emerging and established Canadian designers. Prototype was part of the Studio North area that featured work already in production, but Prototype presented concepts that have not yet reached production stage. Some of the most interesting pieces included the Knuckle(er) table with utensils tray drawers and attached seating by Thompson Rittscher and the modular Stuul Side Table and Stool by Stuart Macquarrie that kept taking on different forms throughout the show. Chairs were sharp, especially the L41 Chair by Geoffrey Lilge and the Fujiyama Chair by Phil Wong, but there were softer options like the Bean Bench by Thout and the Orange Chair and Ottoman by Erin McCutcheon out of cotton jersey and foam. The Helmet Tables by Crawford Noble are made out of MKII helmets manufactured in Toronto in 1941 and the sleek Lounge Chair by DB Studio is of high-density polyurethane foam. More great prototypes after the jump.
