I like designs that are so simple and clever, that they make you slap your head in one of those V-8 moments. This sofa design from South Africa’s XYZ Design is a perfect example. By simply rotating the center cushion, you can quickly convert it from a three seat sofa into a comfy looking chaise longue. No word on whether there are plans to sell this beauty, but it looks to me like the kind of thing Ikea would have.

LunaBlocks: Making Furniture out of Giant Lego Bricks

Lego as furniture? Dude, you’d need, like, a million bricks for that… unless the bricks were gigantic, of course. That’s the whole idea behind LunaBlocks — created by Thierry Nahon and Philippe Landecker of Lunatic Construction, the biggie bricks come in multiple colors and materials that are easily stacked together. Add a pane of glass or a pillow, and you’ve got fully functional furniture that looks straight out of Legoland!
LunaBlocks come in a number of types: your basic LunaBlock; LunaGlass, which are opaque and transparent blocks; LunaSoft, blocks made of durable polypropylene meant for kids; LunaLight, pillow-like material that’s used to create comfortable seating; and LunaMetal, blocks cast in steel.
Wallfa is an intriguing two sided piece of furniture that is both wall and sofa. It offers a comfortable sitting area that becomes playful when users interact from both sides of the wall. Movement, sound and touch hint at what might be happening on the other side.

This new modular furniture system lets you create custom seating areas by rearranging pixel-like blocks into your own unique layouts.
Created by Joe Doucet, founder of the new design collective Bond., the Scape Modular Seating system lets you transform your living space on a whim, thanks to its moveable seating towers.
Individual seating cushion blocks come in five different heights, and varying shades of gray to create an illusion not dissimilar from a topographic map. To rearrange your space, simple slide the different height cushions into the system’s gridded base, and you can completely change the look and layout of your couch in seconds.
The Scape Modular Seating System will be just one of the multi-disciplined collective’s works shown at the Bond. launch party at New York’s Pomegranate Gallery on May 17th, 2008. Check out the Bond.NY website for more details.
