To think of drainage systems as anything but cesspools of waste is really difficult for me and I suspect for lots of other people as well. Honfay Lui is trying to change that way of thinking, and to that effect he designed Matrix, the world’s first contextual drainage system. Matrix is made up of perforated slabs of square metals corresponding to the 26 letters of the Roman alphabet and the numbers 0 through 9. The purpose behind this scrabble-like style of drain is to enable drainage systems to deliver contextual messages much in the same way billboards do.
Pretty clever.
By adding Amsterdam to their list of cities, ExperimentaDesign is expanding the reach of its biennale.
ExperimentaDesign (EXD) is the international Biennale devoted to the culture of design, architecture and creativity.
The first four editions of EXD took place in Lisbon, each edition with another theme. Now it has entered a new stage, expanding the reach of its international cultural biennale to two European capitals, Lisbon and Amsterdam, with events in both cities in alternating years. The organisation of the Biennale believes Lisbon and Amsterdam are two cities devoted to creativity and innovation.
EXD Amsterdam 2008, held from September 18 till November 2, highlights urban culture as the playground for the global citizen. It will present a dynamic variety of exhibitions, events and urban interventions around the theme of ‘Space and Place- design for the urban landscape’.
The Union Bench by swedish i do design. I wish they replaced public benches everywhere! And i’d love to have one in my courtyard/waiting room/etc. The outdoor model for this is made of concrete with wood seating, and the indoor version made of Glass Reinforced Plastic and finished with a comfortable leather cushioned seat and will be launching at this years Salone Satellite in Milan. I love that with no real front or back, and so many ways to sit on it (whether hanging off the edge, or straddling one of the in betweens)… its really created a unique communal yet private space, perfect for groups, loners, and even those with strollers to easily sit down and take a break. Take a look at further images in more situations, with no people, and of the different models…
